Even though over the summer I ‘heard’ that Lee and Nat picked up the “End to End” (Networked Object) award at Microsoft Expo ’08, Pete has sold his project and got a job at Alpkit, Scott got a job at Stanton, Andy won a lot of crystal, Garry has turned Investment Banker at Barclays and Giorgio and Lauren are off to the MA course, we can EASILY do better.

A couple of weeks ago I bumped into Matt who said that he and Tom had visited New Designers. Matt wrote up our conversation like this "I visited New Designers ahead of my final year to get a feel for the event and the level of graduates on other courses in the UK. I was impressed by Dundee's exhibit and the students work. It was clearly amongst the best at the show. It was daunting viewing some of the other exhibits though. There were some incredibly high standards set by courses and individuals."
This year IPD needs to hit the ground running. The timetable is very simple, FIND and PLAY before Christmas, MAKE before Easter TALK until the summer.
Love and Hate
To start the year you need to identify your own “Area of Interest”, something that inspires, annoys, attracts, or fascinates. Something that will hold your interest and motivate you. Something that might form the basis of your future life.
Once you have identified your future obsession you should create a realistic list of contacts. These will be individuals or organisations that are in themselves interesting but they can also introduce you to larger groups of people relevant to your area of interest. We will be reviewing these so provide web links if possible.
Looking at graduates from previous years and the research that is being done around the department the most successful projects are the result of a personal enthusiasm for something.
Scott Hobbs’s Passion
Scott’s project is one of the best examples of a product design inspired by “Working with People”. He chose to research a subject that he loved by getting involved with a lot of people who had a similar obsession.

Andy Law’s Passion
My “Area of Interest” might seem a bit vague and weird but I’m fascinated by how incredibly difficult it is to get something made by a small engineering company if you’re not trained draughtsman. So my area of interest is people who make things and people who want to make things.
Area of Interest

Jon Rogers’s Passion
Jon has become quite unhealthily fascinated by his local fishing museum and how it could be developed without loosing its very distinct character. Jon has also started lobster wrestling on the rocks just outside his house but has yet to find a community of like minded individuals who approve of his tactics.

Research as Innovation
“Research as Innovation” will focus on using “Cultural Probes” as inspiration.
The project starts by students designing probes for their chosen concern with an expert, Jayne Wallace a Jewellery Research Assistant from Newcastle University’s Culture Lab.
